While entry to the museum is free, we opted for a guided tour, which costs just 15 Rand per person and is worth every cent. We were guided by Aunty Susan, an 81-year-old woman whose stories were as heartfelt as they were powerful. She recounted how the vibrant community of District Six was uprooted—families, friends, schools, workplaces, and hospitals were all destroyed as people were relocated to lesser-quality housing in distant areas. Hearing about her family’s struggles, especially her mother’s longing to return, gave us a profoundly personal perspective on the pain and resilience of those affected.
The museum does a wonderful job of showcasing the history of District Six, but having someone like Aunty Susan bring the exhibits to life with her own stories was an entirely different and invaluable experience. She also spoke about the significance of being invited back to District Six in 1994, marking a symbolic step toward healing and reconciliation.
