点评：Good and bad, could be a great resort let down by the slope and lift management.
Let me explain…
Our accommodation was brilliant (Sowell residences, New Chastillon) you couldn’t get any closer to the slopes if you tried.
The suite was basic but sufficient and had all the amenities you need on a self catering holiday.
Staff were nice and friendly, and the lift to the ski store was a godsend with 6 kids in tow!
The pubs and restaurants were all really nice and friendly, our favorite was the crocodile bar, very friendly and a warm welcome from the owner each time we went in.
The food can be a bit samey in the restaurants offering basic things like burgers, pizzas, pasta, steaks etc but from our experience all were very good. We particularly liked the cow club and it was quite reasonable.
My issue comes with the slope management or lack of.
We chose this resort for a couple of reasons.
the snow making and the 480 snow cannons guaranteeing snow.
The amount of beginner runs available.
Firstly our party was 10 people of which 6 were children and 1 adult that had never skied before.
The main green run, boulevard, front de niege and chastillon is serviced by 3 drag lifts. For the entire duration of our trip the upper drag lift and Chastillon drag lift was closed! I understand boulevard being shut as there’s no snow making on the upper stretch but to shut Chastillon lift was madness to me as Chastillon run was covered by the snow cannons and skiable throughout.
This caused a real lack of beginner skiing and basically meant that the only skiable green run was front de niege at around 75m!
As there was only 1 drag lift servicing this run the queues were horrendous! 30 minutes plus at times.
This was exacerbated further come around 10am when literally hundreds of infants came in on coaches every day to a massive ski school. This jammed the only drag lift up really badly and the skiing was like nothing I’d seen! Hundreds of people on a tiny stretch of slope, honestly I’ve never seen anything like it!
The snow making was non exiting and for the duration I didn’t see the cannons operate once.
By our second to last day stones and rocks were showing through the slope and the drag lift run, if they were in use at all we didn’t see any of that snow.
To escape this I decided to take a gamble and took the kids and my brother in law up the chair lift (grosse Combe) to a green run (Lavant) with the smallest section of blue.
A mistake on my part as the blues here are particularly challenging and not suitable for novices! You could not snowplow the top section and needed to be able to parallel ski confidently, The snow cover was poor and without the cannons operating it made the blues much harder than they needed to be with sheet ice and rock coming through in lots of places. My brother in law had to slide down this section on his bum much to my amusement 🤣
I tried the other longer blues (avenue and chamois chapland) and again, sections not suitable for a novice so we were limited to a 75m run with horrendous lift queues for the duration.
This was causing issues like novices getting impatient and going up the mountain, way out of the comfort zone, and numerous skiers being stretchered out every day! One morning whilst having a drink and something to eat we saw 4 people stretchered off the mountain in a couple of hours.
In my opinion, completely unnecessary, totally avoidable and made an otherwise lovely trip a bit of a disappointment.
There was absolutely no reason not to open the Chastillon drag lift, this would have solved a lot of these problems! And the resort has absolutely no reason not to employ the snow cannons other than cheaping out on their guests!
I’m by no means a seasoned skier, but I’ve been to a few resorts (Les deux alpes, alp d’heurz, pas de la casa, Arinsal, schladming, Poiana Brasov, Levi)
The blue runs were the most challenging I’ve come across and would have been challenging enough with decent snow cover but with the lack of intervention they were too much for a novice and in some cases would say they were more akin to Reds.
I probably wouldn’t return with the family if I’m honest, it was far too busy on very limited slopes for the children and novice skiers, again…it really needn’t have been I just think the slopes and lifts were really badly managed given the sheer volume of people in resort and lack of natural snow.
Of course I understand that the lack of snow isn’t the resorts fault but with 480 snow cannons and series of drag lifts this could have been much better skiing.
When you consider what we spend on a ski trip nowadays (just south of £10k for my family of 6) I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect every available slope to be flooded by the snow cannons, not too much to ask really is it?
