Best thing we did in Port Vila!
Underwater Post Office的点评
点评：Amazing experience! We had our driver, Kalo (highly recommended!!), take us to Hideaway Island – about 15 mins from Port Vila. You hop out of the car, enjoy the lovely locals swimming in the bay, and wait on the pier for the ferry. Not 100% how the process works, we stood looking at Hideaway for about 10 minutes and the ferry came over. Maybe call ahead, if you’re concerned. Either way, we got to chat to some of the local kids and loved the whole vibe of the area straight away.
The boat ride takes about 5 minutes. You walk through the gift shop and pay for your day pass, as well as stopping to grab some snorkelling gear and, obviously, a waterproof postcard. We sat down at the beautiful resort, grabbed a beer each, and wrote a postcard to each other. The water was calm and the resort was really quiet. We were staying in central Port Vila at the Grand and really wished we did a nigh on Hideaway. Yeah, it’s a little rustic, but the place is gorgeous and some of the best snorkelling I’ve ever experienced. The staff were lovely and we jumped in the water to visit the world’s only underwater post box.
Now, I will (embarrassingly admit) that it took me a few tries to get to the box. So, it’s about a 50m swim from the shore and there’s a pontoon right next to it, if you need to catch your breathe before diving down. The depth to the post box is about 3m. I’m used to freediving with weights, so just make sure you calm yourself and let the oxygen out of your lungs. I bobbed up a few times because I’m out of practise. However, the post box is very accessible and a fun dive down. Such a unique experience and a big highlight to our Port Vila, Vanuatu trip! Again, really wish we stayed on Hideaway Island – it’s beautiful and the staff were so friendly. The snorkelling is the best I’ve seen since I was a kid diving the Great Barrier Reef. The fish are super friendly and the reef is so well cared for and colourful. An absolute must if you’re in Vanuatu, Port Vila.
