National War Museum - Fort St Elmo的点评
点评：Occupying the tip of the peninsula between the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour in Malta is Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum. We were unprepared for the volume of tourists in Valetta when we arrived the previous day, so we made our way to the fort by foot in time for opening of 9 am, hoping to beat the crowds. We needn’t have bothered. Although this is a fascinating museum, the slow trickle of tourists on this morning surprised us.
The museum is arranged chronologically with various gallery spaces devoted to different time periods and key events. The interpretive signage in Maltese and English explained art, munitions and war-time strategies, which was supported by numerous multi-media displays. Malta’s strategic geographic importance over many centuries is the backdrop to the many wars fought on this tiny island; hence its history, not only its wartime history, is rich and multi-layered. The Knights of St John have an outsized place in the island’s history, as do the British.
We spent about 3 hours at the Fort and should have brought some water or cold drinks with us - we weren’t expecting to stay so long. There is a gift shop that sells drinks near the last gallery space. The galleries are sequentially numbered and are dotted throughout the Fort complex, so a hat for the hot sunny day we visited was a must. We booked online the day before - however, you still need to queue at the ticket office on arrival to have the mobile barcode scanned.
For history buffs, this is a must see destination in Malta.
