Beautifully restored and furnished historical house and gardens. Immaculately maintained. Well worth a visit.
Narryna Heritage Museum的点评
点评:We had often walked along Hampden Road past Narryna saying that at some stage we should visit. That time finally came and what a wonderful, informative visit it turned out to be. The cost of entry was $10 per adult, $8 for Concession holders and $5 for students.
We were met in the foyer of the house by one of the dedicated volunteers and given a brief informative rundown of its history, the layout of the house (with a self-guided handout describing various rooms) and its various exhibits.
The Georgian townhouse was built between 1835-1840 by Captain Andrew Haig, a merchant who also built some of the earliest warehouses on Salamanca Place. Unfortunately for him and his family he became bankrupt and had to vacate the property. Subsequently the house became the residence of various professional people before becoming a boarding house, a hospital and in 1955, a folk museum.
The house has been beautifully renovated and furnished with an amazing amount of period furniture and nick knacks. There are also collections of art, photographs, costumes, jewellery, scrimshaw and furniture etc.
On the day that we visited there was also a special exhibition of Charles Dicken's inspired curiosities.
The self-guided visit encompassed most of the rooms both upstairs and downstairs as well as out the back of the house. Don't miss the wonderful vegetable garden as well as the beautifully crafted grounds.
Well worth a visit.
