点评:The original 1905 square at the site of the former Montevideo citadel, was a garden with flower beds and vegetation designed by Carlos Thays. However during the 1920s a enormous statue of Artigas was erected in the middle, ruining the scenic character of the place. The situation worsened when ugly highrise buildings (perhaps with exception of the Salvo tower) were erected around the square. During the military dictatorship in the 1970s the ashes of Artigas were placed in a subterreanian mausoleum structure near the colossal statue to underscore the 'true' nationalism of the junta.
I did not find the overall outcome positive. For me it is a rather gloomy place, especially after dark. No terraces, or performances of artists, but many homeless people, while other locals increase their pace to get away as soon as possible.

我觉得整体结果并不乐观。对我来说,这是一个相当阴暗的地方,尤其是在天黑之后。没有露台,也没有艺术家的表演,但有很多无家可归的人,而其他当地人则加快了脚步,尽快离开。
