点评:When planning our trip to Quito, I intentionally booked a hotel near the heart of the city's historic district - Plaza de San Francisco - as I'd done for a trip last year to Mexico City. Both cities were conquered by explorers from Spain in the 1500's, so I expected similarities in their historic hubs. There were indeed some similar features, but also some notable differences.
Quito's historic center is significantly smaller, and it's lacking the human element that would reflect the history and culture of the country. Street artists and performers and indigenous dancers are missing. There are no tents for local merchants to display handmade wares.
Further, I anticipated that the historic buildings surrounding the plaza would include the seat of government and Ecuador's other important federal agencies. Instead, the historic buildings in the plaza are of a religious nature, while government buildings are scattered within a few blocks.
There are very few benches for public seating in the plaza, and there isn't a shade tree within sight. We rested on a (very uncomfortable) concrete bench here and spent fifteen minutes people-watching until we got overheated from the sun, in mid-December. (And since we reside in a tropical climate, we aren't easily overheated.) A better venue for observing activity in the plaza would be one of the restaurants located around the edges of the square, which offer shaded patio seating.
The traffic jam within several blocks of the plaza is an unending knot, so you can expect to breathe a lot of vehicle exhaust. Sometimes the diesel fumes become overwhelming. If you aren't staying at a hotel within walking distance of the plaza and do want to explore this area, I highly recommend taking advantage of the hop-on, hop-off bus to visit the historic district. The bus drops passengers directly in front of the plaza.
