点评:I took a local bus to from Lerwick to Scalloway, the former capital of the Shetlands. This pretty town is on the west coast and is protected from the strong winds by islands off the coast. It fell into decline and is now a quaint small town. I visited the excellent Scalloway Museum.
The Shetlands are known for their wool products. One of those islands is Fair Isle. You can see a child's Shetland Fair Isle jumper on a jumper board, which was used for preserving the shape and dimensions of a jumper after weaving. The museum had an outdoor boat exhibit as well as a few Shetland ponies in a pasture adjacent to the museum.
The last part of the museum dealt with the Shetland Bus. When the Germans occupied Norway, some people escaped in boats to the Shetlands. That gave the resistance the idea of traveling back to Norway in small fishing boats to sabotage the occupiers. This movement to help Norway during World War II was called the Shetland Bus.
Tip: The museum is closed on Saturdays.
