So Much Colour in the High Desert

点评：The Antiplano region covering southern Bolivia is an area visited with tour groups or tour guides. It will usually take 2 days to get from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile to Uyuni in Bolivia.
As far as I know, self-driving is not permitted through the national park and over the roads connecting the Bolivian border near San Pedro de Atacama and Uyuni. If you could self-drive, it would be a brave choice. The roads are a maze and extremely rough. There are very few signs to show the way and the poor driver would not be able to enjoy any section of the journey as they would have to be too focused on the road.
After the painful exercise of the border crossing, the remoteness and beauty of the region opens before you. There are many places to stop and marvel at, including lakes of every colour, volcanic activity, hot springs, colourful hills and mountains and all types of strange rock formations. The promised flamingos do not disappoint – they are there and plentiful, especially at the famous Laguna Colorado.
The ride is rough along the stony volcanic trails. And it’s high, so prepare for possible altitude sickness (prior medication may help as it’s pretty much impossible to ease your way to the higher elevations as often advised). Also, there can be temperature extremes. I can’t say what it would be like in summer but at the time I went in mid-April, it was so cold it did make it difficult to get out of the car.
Overall though, the experience is unmissable and is definitely one to jot on your bucket lists.
