点评:We thought we were prepared for this trip but it was a shock to the system. We stayed in one of the hotels by the gate at the bottom of the site and the whole community is quite overwhelming for an average tourist. We were told that it was hard to use bank cards so to use cash but you can only take the equivalent of £80 into the country so are reliant on changing cash at the airport because we didn’t see one ATM the whole week! Everyone is hustling, bustling and shouting and we often gave out £200 EGP (about £3 UK) to just be left alone. A firm No Thank You (La Shukran) works with most people. The new main entrance at the top of the site is quite well run, there are free hop on and off buses taking you up and down and cafes/shops at each level. The sphinx entrance is more of a free for all and quite overwhelming but we bought our tickets online and they arrived in our inbox straightaway (despite the man who sells them at the gate insisting they wouldn’t!) We booked several local trips with guides but be prepared for beaten up cars, crazy driving and no one wearing seatbelts. It’s also worth going to Saqqara and Memphis for a different take on pyramid construction. Despite multiple warnings, we found Uber to be a reliable way to get around.
