Unfinished Obelisk的点评
点评：This ancient quarry is a good site to visit if you are interested in where the red granite used in a lot of the monuments came from, or want to see the impressive engineering and skill the stone workers had in removing large blocks of granite. There are plenty of stairs to get to the attraction so beware. If you head down you can see pictographs of dolphins, ostriches, and flamingos thought to have been painted by quarry workers. If you head up you go to the Obelisk.
The Obelisk is 42 meters (137 feet) long and weighing in around 1000 to 1200 tons. It appears they were in the final stages of digging it out when it cracked. I can't even imagine how upset I would have been!
Guides will tell you they used hand held pounding stones to dig a trench, then hammer wedges from a Sycamore tree in the trenches. They would then pour water on the wedges causing them to swell and split the rock. You can still see what looks like scoop marks all around the quarry and Obelisk. I personally don't think these scoop marks were made with pounding stones, but who knows.
You probably won't need more than 30 minutes to see everything. There are restrooms onsite, for a tip of course. Bring water. Also of note, there will be vendors should you want to purchase anything, so be prepared to be hassled.
