点评:We saw some while approaching the spot from the boat. It was a great experience for the three of us, all over 40. We used Wreck Bay as an operator, and they were absolutely great on all counts. Nicolás, the guide, was very knowledgeable and patient, and the boat crew was attentive and professional.
We went to a beach first (Manglecito) and then to Kicker Rock, also known locally as León Dormido, or “Sleeping Lion.”
At the beach, we saw turtles, stingrays, marine iguanas, and trumpetfish—a real dorky, long-nosed, light-colored fella. Some biology students were assembling a turtle and a sea lion from bones they had found.
Approaching León Dormido, you get a real sense of the enormity and strangeness of this volcanic tuff cone. The myriad life forms you find along the walls of this structure are varied, colorful, and dynamic.
As I swam along, looking downward in search of the elusive hammerhead sharks, my mind wandered to many things. Why should I expect to see a specific organic being just because I patronized a business and used propelled machines to get us out into the wild? They don’t owe us anything. We are lucky enough to be breathing through a tube in the middle of nowhere, fully submerged in strange waters, in a staged land. And if we fail to appreciate that, we are doomed to a meaningless life.
Soon after, my friend said he saw one flying real close to where I was and he ruined my train of thought.
The people who scuba dive instead of snorkel did see many!
