点评:This is an excellent, modern museum located in the heart of Leeuwarden. Costing 17.50 euros for entry, my one regret based on previous reviews was not leaving enough time to give my visit justice.
Of the three floors, two really grabbed my attention. The floor that tells of Friesland's evolution, of man's battle against water and tides to build the landscape that we see today, is fascinating. The interpretation boards have both Dutch (or maybe Fries) and well translated English. The physical exhibits don't have the translation, but not to worry as each room in the exhibition hall has laminated cards with translations, so nothing was lost.
And then the floor that tells of the World War II years is again fascinating. Although Leeuwarden airfield was a very important night fighter base and subject to Allied air attacks, the area was essentially bypassed by the advancing armies. However, the floor helps to understand the complex relationship that existed with the occupiers, something that is still in the process of coming to terms with. Collaborate, quietly comply or resist?
I had less than two hours before the museum closed for the day, for me it was not enough. There is also a very high quality gift shop, and a cafe that sells wonderful cakes. I'm glad I went, I learned a lot.
