A Heartfelt Experience at a Family-Run Turtle Hatchery

点评：During our recent trip to Hikkaduwa, we visited the Turtle Hatchery, and it turned out to be one of the most meaningful and educational stops on our itinerary. While it's a small-scale operation, it's run with so much care, passion, and integrity by the owner and his family—you immediately feel the authenticity of their mission.
Since we were visiting during the off-season, the hatchery was quiet and we had the entire place to ourselves. Although there weren’t many baby turtles being released that day, we were still able to see several species and sizes of turtles, each with their own rescue or rehabilitation story. It was a rare opportunity to engage up close and at our own pace.
The owner, along with his wife and son, personally takes care of the turtles and runs the hatchery. Another kind gentleman assists with cleaning and maintaining the tanks. What stood out the most was the owner's deep knowledge and genuine dedication to protecting these endangered creatures. He spoke excellent English, patiently answering all our questions and explaining in detail how they locate turtle eggs, how the hatching process is monitored, and how the baby turtles are released at night to avoid predators like birds.
You can tell this is not a commercialized setup, but a labor of love focused on conservation and education. We spent well over an hour here learning about the life cycle of sea turtles, their threats, and how even small operations like this are making a big difference.
The hatchery is also conveniently located—just an easy tuk-tuk ride from the main Hikkaduwa beach stretch, making it a perfect short excursion if you're looking to do something meaningful and relaxed.
