点评:This forest hike through the UNESCO world heritage site was one of the highlights of my visits in the Baracoa area, together with El Yunque and El Yumuri. For me it was fantastic to walk through the lush forest and see nature in a near-pristine state.
There are several hikes of different lengths through the park. We did the longest of the three main hikes – el Balcón de Iberia (about 9km) - because it seemed to be the most interesting. We set out from Baracoa about 8am and finished the hike around 4pm, driving back to Baracoa with a stop at the picturesque Playa Maguana for an invigorating swim before heading back to Baracoa where we arrived around nightfall (6.30pm). On the way through the tropical forest in the park the path crossed the river 9 times. Depending on the rainfall, you might be able to cross some places with stepping stones but you do have to take your shoes off and wade the river quite a few times. Alexey, our guide, brought a very basic but much-appreciated lunch to replenish our reserves of energy during the lunch-break – nothing is available in the park, apart from coconuts, though you can probably buy cucuruchú (the coconut/sugar/fruit desert wrapped in palm leaves unique to the region of Baracoa) somewhere near the entrance to the park. On the way back we were glad to pay the ox-cart driver a small fee to facilitate the multiple river crossings and riding in his cart was an experience in itself. Alexey is an experienced, enthusiastic, and attentive guide and especially knows how to communicate his deep knowledge of the fauna and flora. The biodiversity (birds, ferns, orchids, and many other plants, lizards, insects,.. ) doesn’t leap out and hit you in the face. It’s worth going with someone who knows where to look. Contact info for Alexey who also does guided tours of El Yunque and El Yumuri : alexey79.rame@nauta.cu, +(53)54187264 on whatsapp. From what I could see, the boat tours in Humboldt don’t seem to be of much interest.
