World-class museum with many problems
以色列博物馆的点评
点评：We arrived at 1.5 hours after opening, in the middle of the week The parking lot attendant assured us that there were no spaces left, but we found a space on a side street, past the bus parking lot. The three small children (13, 12, 9) loved everything they saw, but only after we explained it to them. We took them to see classical art, modern art, Israeli art, Egyptian archaeology, Judaica, sculptures, millionaires' rooms and four synagogues. That was all we could manage in 3.5 hours.
At the entrance we were told we could only picnic on benches right outside, mostly in the sun. Much later we discovered an indoor-outdoor picnic area with chairs and tables.
Signage is almost nonexistent. Guards pointed us in the right direction, telling us to ask the next guard, etc.
Long hallways feature empty walls. Space is so wasted that only 7,000 items are on exhibit, even though the museum owns around 500,000 items. There is room for at least 15,000 items. The museum's philosophy during the three-year renovation was that they didn't want to overwhelm the visitors with too much to look at. Nonsense.
Explanatory signs next to the pictures are printed so small that it is almost impossible to read them without getting so close that the guards warn you to stand further back.
The museum closed at 16:00, the precise time the amazing museum shop closes and the Modern Restaurant's kitchen closes. We ended up spending our final half hour in the shop, skipping the restaurant, and driving to the nearby Azrieli Malcha Mal for dinner, the parking lot and food court of which are horrors of their own.
