点评:A wonderful boat expedition down the Missouri River, just outside of Helena, lasting about two hours. The cruise was expertly narrated by a local woman whose speaking talents were off the charts. She did everything off the cuff, although clearly she had repeated the words so many times, they were more polished than a Barack Obama speech. Fortunately, this wasn’t a corny cruise with silly jokes; this was educational, entertaining, inspiring, and an effective way for passengers to relive history.
Along the route, we were greeted by great towering walls of limestone. While we saw one deer, an osprey, and a couple bald eagles, Cherry Wonderdog was a bit disappointed not to catch a glimpse of any scampering bighorn sheep or mountain goats, even on the earliest 10 AM tour. No vultures or falcons (peregrine and prairie) soared on the updrafts. No otters, squirrels, ermine, beaver, mountain lions, black bears or other wild creatures were seen either. The
A large part of the tour was focused on the story of Mann Gulch, the site of the raging forest fire that killed 13 smokejumpers in August, 1949 and the subject of Norman Maclean’s book “Young Men and Fire”. Cherry Wonderdog still wonders why, with controlled burns, these poor smokejumpers had to risk (and lose) these lives fighting a fire in this location.
That being said, this is a great boat trip. We enjoyed the quieter boat with no inside quarters (and no bathroom either). It means stopping along the way at a campground in an absolutely idyllic location.
