点评：Unique experience to watch boats traverse the locks to or from Puget Sound. Fun to watch them move through the narrow canals after the water level has been raised or lowered.
The salmon ladder is also very interesting when salmon are spawning. I lucked out in August and saw many Chinook salmon. Not my area of expertise, but I believe only a few species use the ladder and only for a few months of the year.
The walkways are pretty busy and somewhat touristy.
I strongly recommend taking the daily 2PM tour. It includes an introductory lecture; a couple of stops in the botanical garden; time at the main lock; and time at the fish ladder. The tour provides historical context about alternate routes that were chosen, and how they chose materials for the canals and gates.
Keep in mind if you're using paid parking or have a tight schedule, they may temporarily close the walkways to allow boats through.
I took a bus from the Magnolia side and walked about a half mile to the locks. There is also public transportation on the Ballard side, which is a short walk from the botanical garden. The Ballard side has adjacent bars and restaurants .
