点评:My review is biased because the Dutch and Flemish church interiors do not interest me much. I came prepared having reviewed a detailed guide book, perhaps giving me over expectations. Honestly, if you miss this one, there are plenty of other churches in Europe to compensate for your loss. Only a few things really interested me; the carvings of the pillar biters, the dog-whipper cartouche, the carvings on the choir screen, the floor map of the numbered graves, the monument to the hydraulic engineers.
The pillar biters are two figures carved in wood at the ends of the choir screen, grasping at a column and sinking their teeth into it. Both figures prominently display a rosary hanging from their belts. The Dutch word for this type of person is ‘pilaar bijter’ (pillar-biter) and there are various proverbs that warn against the species. Pillar-biters symbolize excessive piety as well as hypocrisy. While pretending to be virtuous, pillar-biters neglect charitable duties. While appearing outwardly devoted to the church, they in reality are gnawing away at the foundations of the church they purport to uphold. Also their demeanour at home is quite different. As a Southern Netherlandish proverb has it: “who is a pillarbiter in church, shxts devils in his own house’. The pillar-biter theme is not very frequent in art so it is quite rate to see these carvings in Saint Bavo Church. There are also several charming carvings of animals and people on the choir screen, including to full sized carved dogs who carry another little animal in a pouch secured around their necks.
