点评:Miguasha is famous for its fossils, especially a very important fossil discovered as recently as 2010. This fossil, known familiarly as the king of Miguasha, provides crucial information about evolution of land-dwelling creatures from water-dwelling creatures. It is so far the only one of its kind. The museum about fossils is terrific and explains really well why fossils are created only under certain conditions, displaying flat and 3D fossils that are framed by clear and interesting information. It focuses on the Devonian era (“age of fishes”) in itself and as context for the chief fossil.
The museum also presents the social and political history of this site’s exploration (and exploitation), tracing the shift from opportunistic plundering to international collaboration in studying fossils.
There are great examples of flat and 3-D fossils. I wished I had brought a curious 10-year-old with me because the museum opened up so much. There were some special kids’ activities, also.
The guided tour of the beach area where fossils are discovered was instructive and fun, although be advised there are many stairs to go down and then up again.
The only weakness of the Natural History Exhibits was that the Devonian Lunch Counter offers only bottled drinks and packaged sandwiches in the summer even though it is equipped to be a little cafe. Why not operate the full version of the cafe when the tourists are buzzing?
