Time for the canyon to form is 100 million years.
This was a remarkable experience and almost otherworldly. The water is warm and engaging, and some of the climbs are tricky, and you need a decent core, but this is mostly doable. Even if you don't get to the waterfall, the experience and beauty of the rocks, water, and birds are amazing. We went early and had a private guide. Actually, he was stationed, as were several others, to help you negotiate the ladders. But we were the second couple in the canyon, and he took us the whole way to the top (ages 64 and 58) and even showed us how to use the water to coast down.
This is a stunning experience but is not a picnic. you don't have to be fit, but you have to be patient and not afraid of water currents.
