点评:Arriving in Bulgaria in the early afternoon, we decided to check out the 900-year-old Boyana Church on the outskirts of Sofia. We thought we shouldn’t miss it, considering it’s been designated a World Heritage Site. We hired a taxi driver to take us to the church and bring us back, all working out smoothly. The church is actually very small – almost tiny – but the frescoes inside are incredible (unfortunately, no photos allowed, but you can find online). The oldest date to the 11th century, but only fragments of those remain. The second layer, painted in 1259, now comprise the majority, and represent one of the best-preserved examples of medieval art existing in the Balkans. To help protect the murals, the church is kept closed and air conditioned (at first, we couldn’t even find an entrance), and the number of people allowed inside at any one time is strictly controlled. Unfortunately, the staff are not particularly friendly or helpful and visitors are pretty much on their own unless they have their own guide along.
