I visit Hakodate every year with my wife, before traveling farther north to Sapporo, not to ski but just to appreciate the snow. And then to points beyond in Hokkaido.
But let me limit myself here to the Morning Market in Hakodate, where you can fish for your meal -- there is a giant bathtub filled with water and fish where you fish and then give your catch to a booth where they will cook it up for you!
My wife and I always visit Hanamaru’s booth, run by young Japanese lady who works very hard and makes the best little breakfast tidbits. She also sells little items she makes, which she knits or sews. She is extremely diffident, but lovely, really. And the food is always so unique and tasty. I highly recommend her offerings. She is located in the Food Court part of the Morning Market.
Then we always stop for coffee at Jujiya’s Coffee Shop. The gentleman who runs this shop makes a fabulous cup of coffee. He has become something of a myth at the Morning Market. People just stop and stare and take fotos of him -- since the stall chairs are usually always taken. He has great style when making the coffee, and the coffee itself is of a high quality.
Jujiya has been around for quite some time and has been written about quite often. It is a family business, and I think this what makes this outlet so special. I highly recommend this experience.
In Hakodate itself, which is a coastal town, just as you enter Hokkaido, and the best kept secret in Jpan, don’t forget to visit the beautiful Russian Orthdox Church. It’s really gorgeous,, especially surrounded by the world’s best snow.
Today I will move on to Saporro, and will write from there.
