点评:Built in the thirteenth century, what we see there is a gigantic solar chariot with twelve pairs of exquisitely-ornamented wheels dragged by seven rearing horses. The temple comprised a sanctum with a lofty ‘Sikhara’, a ‘Jagamohana’ and a detached ‘Nata-Mandira’ (hall of dance) in the same axis, besides numerous subsidiary mandirs. The sanctum and the ‘Nata-Mandira’ have lost their roof in past. The 24 intricately carved wheels at the Konark Sun Temple represent the cosmic chariot of the Hindu sun god, Surya, and symbolize time (Kalachakra), the cycle of life, and the 24 hours of the day. Each of the 24 wheels features 8 main spokes and 8 thinner spokes. The 8 spokes divide a day into 8 equal prahars (3-hour periods). The wheels are also designed to act as highly precise sundials, where the shadow cast by the spokes can be used to accurately determine the time of day. The 24 wheels symbolize the 24 fortnights (or the 12 months) of the Hindu lunar calendar, with the 12 pairs of wheels representing the 12 zodiac signs.
Temple is open from sunrise to sunset. Ticket are available in cash & online. We reached after sunset there and not able to go inside. Whatever we saw was from some distance.
But we enjoyed the Light & Sound Show held there inside the complex. There are two shows every day. Tickets are available there only buy paying online. While in queue, tickets of the 1st show were sold out, we opted for 2nd show tickets. Be there 30 minutes early before the show time to grab your tickets, peak season go earlier than 30 minutes. Show was amazing and informative regarding history of Konark temple, lasting around 40 minutes.
Show Timings: December to February: 6:30 PM & 7:20 PM; March to November: 7:30 PM & 8:20 PM; Mondays: No show.
Overall my recommendation will be to visit Konark Temple around 4pm. See the Temple. Then book Light & Sound Show tickets around 5:30pm for 6:30pm show.
