点评:This is your quintessential japanese garden! It was smaller than we expected, but that was kind of nice because you got to see everything and didn’t feel like you were missing anything. The rhododendrons were in full bloom, and they were beautiful! The 70-year-old weeping cherry blossom was past its prime, but still pretty to see. There are also stands of bamboo, little waterfalls, a pond . . . very pretty and well-kept. Much nicer than the east gardens at the imperial palace.
If you can, stop off at tenera bread & meals (tenera.jp) before entering the garden. This bakery is so, so good! It’s a short walk from the subway, and then another short walk from the bakery to rikugien. We got a couple of slices of cheese bread, a pork bun, and a black sesame doughnut. We then walked to rikugien gardens and had lunch there (they have a number of seating areas around the snack / gift shop in the gardens). It was such a nice day. The bakery items were delicious; the pastry is a proper, laminated, flaky puff pastry. And the black sesame doughnut – we could’ve eaten 6 of them!!
And the gardens are a perfect spot for a picnic
