点评:This was a spontaneous visit. We hadn’t heard of Newhailes until it started popping up on my Facebook and a decision was made to hop in the car and brave the A720 Edinburgh bypass.
The trek was definitely worth it. Although on the smaller side, the house was lovely. The property had been in the same family for 300 years and there was a collection of furniture and art works throughout the entire duration (including makeshift cat flaps for the last owner’ feline friends).
We were lucky to be able to group of two, and our guide, Mhairi, made sure all questions were answered and we had enough time to examine the rooms. No spoilers, but the last room on the tour will make you go WOW!
The property could do with more investment and restoration, but there is definitely enough there to immerse yourself. The grounds are on the smallish side, but dotted with interesting structures and worth a walk on a dry day.
Make sure to visit the Stables Café. The soup was lovely and the tea pots enormous. The gift shop is also well stocked.
There is a play area for the little ones, which we didn’t visit.
