点评:We drove through the Cairngorms on the Snow Roads, from south to north. The roads are fine!!! We almost skipped the snow roads because we were worried they would be too extreme for us (esp driving standard on the left side of the road!), but they were actually much better than we expected (I am used to mountain roads in Colorado, like the Alpine Loop, and this was a piece of cake compared to mountain roads in the US). There is a long stretch north of Ballater that is single track and you have to pull off the side when encountering another car, but for the most part it was relatively easy, and the roads didn’t have many other cars on it. There are a lot of pullovers that you can use both for scenic outlooks and to pass another car. All of that being said, I would be much more nervous in winter if the roads were slushy or icy, though people clearly drive them in winter to access the ski resort areas. 🤷🏼♀️
The scenery is gorgeous, throughout the entire length of the drive. We stopped in Ballater for lunch and it was a lovely town with friendly people, and we would stay there on a future trip as a base for doing more exploring of the park. We stopped at Balmoral Castle for a quick picture of the gates (it was closed for the season because the royal family was in residence), and King Charles drove out while we were standing there - so we didn’t get to see the castle but we did see the king!
Finally, watch out for sheep in the road! They are…plentiful.
