点评:Access to the church is by ferry from Solvorn to Urnes. Many guide books recommend parking your car in Solvorn and using the ferry as a foot passenger to visit the church but as an alternative, you can take a car across on the small ferry and continue you journey on the other side of the lake. Cost is similar to a return journey as a foot passenger but the main advantage is you have more time to view the church as ferry timings leave little time to explore after the guided tour. Note the ferry is not on the auto charge system but they do accept payment by credit card payable as you drive onto the boat
The church is one of the oldest surviving in Norway dating from around 1130 when construction of Stave churches first began. It is a UNESCO listed heritage building and is the fourth church in this location. Access is by guided tour with tickets obtained from the white house a short distance away that lasts around 20 minutes. From the ferry terminal it is quite a stiff 25-minute walk uphill to the church, if driving there is a car park around 100m from here.
The church received numerous modifications after the Reformation with installation of pews, a grandiose alter and a bell tower but on the north side of the outside wall, the portal of the previous building and a complex wall carving well preserved are inserted into the fabric of the building. Inside, there are several remnants of the earlier building detailed in the guided tour.
