The church was built starting from 1292, and it was hevily modified in the 17th century.
It was damaged by the 2012 earthquake and it was restored and reopened to the public in 2018.
The church is characterised by its rich stucco decoration and its coffered ceiling depicting the Apotheosis of some Saints.
Several artists at the court of the Este family were commissioned works for this church, including Olivier Dauphin, Sigismondo Caula, Francesco Stringa, Lattanzio Maschio and Giovanni Lazzoni.
It also houses the 16th-century terracotta "Lamentation" by Antonio Begarelli and a fragment of a 14th-century fresco of a Madonna and Child attributed to Tomaso da Modena.
