点评:The Menin Gate and the medieval Cloth Hall are the two main sights in Ieper (Ypres) but if you have the time, St Martins Cathedral is also worth a look.
It’s easy to combine with a visit with the Cloth Hall because they are both right in the centre of the city and are only minutes apart.
You will see the towering cathedral steeple from anywhere in the centre of Ieper (it's the tallest in Belguim).
Built in the 13th century, in the Gothic style, it was all but levelled during the WWI bombing that also left the Cloth Hall in ruins.
Incredibly, both were faithfully rebuilt, almost from ashes. If I didn’t know the history, I’d have thought I was looking at the original 13th century church. You’d be hard-pressed to know know the difference.
Inside, the most impressive features are the stained glass windows, the soaring ceiling, and the centuries-old tombstones under your feet.
Other things to look out for are the 12th century wooden Madonna and child, the tombs of Cornelius Jansen, the 17th century Bishop of Ypres, and Count Robert III of Flanders (1249-1322).
In the grounds outside, you can walk through the site of the old monastery and cloisters. These were not rebuilt after the war. Instead they were kept as open ground, a kind of memorial site where remnants of the cathedral were also left.
