Long exposed sandy beach with forest trails bordering the dunes

点评：We continued about 2 miles beyond the turnoff on the B9089 for the official Roseisle Forest car park and, whilst heading towards Burghead, came upon a small car park at the edge of the woods. It was free to park here and we walked the forest road beyond the gate, took a right at the T-junction and followed the track through peaceful forest until we reached the beach on the outskirts of Burghead. It’s a trail which has a gentle rolling terrain likely to appeal to cyclists but we didn’t come across too many of them, or other people for that matter. There are a few access points to the beach through the dunes but if you follow the trail to the end it’s probably the easiest route. The beach is sandy but very exposed.
When we arrived at Burghead, next to the caravan park, there was a kiosk selling refreshments however it only had outdoor seating and the windy weather didn’t tempt us to stop there. With hindsight we probably should have done so because there was no café in the town and the only other option was a takeaway from the Co-Op.
After visiting the Burghead Fort Visitor Centre and the Well we returned roughly the same route, stopping off to have a look at a WWII pillbox which had been built on the sand dunes. Like all castles erected on pillars of sand it had suffered subsidence and was tilted at an unusual angle blocking any chance of access. In keeping with the military theme we got a flypast of three helicopters following the coastline towards Kinloss.
The area was very pleasant for a walk which included forest and beach and in our case included a visit to Burghead where there were public toilets at the harbour.
