点评:A charming villa barely touched by time which gives an insight into life for the wealthy in 19th century Hydra. However there must be much to say about the villa and its most famous resident but the tour was completely perfunctory. The property had been closed for a number of years but reopened in 2021.
Only the ground floor is currently open. It was said the remainder is undergoing renovation. The closing time was stated as 1530 but my tour at 1440 was described as the last of the day. There was no entry charge but visitors were asked to make a donation. It was not clear if this was for the guide as a tip or for the preservation of the villa.
There was an interesting insight that the nanny for the children taught them to speak German, French and English but their father spoke Greek only with difficulty due his Albanian heritage and this interesting aspect was not mentioned. When an American tourist clapped at the end of the tour it seemed a sarcastic gesture and the guide seemed embarrassed. It is a steep climb up more than 60 uneven steps with no handrail. It is worth it for the views and the quirky nature of the property.
The guide described it as a sort of castle. It is a large house but not particularly lavish or ornate. It was built by Italian workmen and all the ceilings are of wood. It has a commanding view of Hydra and deserves to be far better presented. Photo were not allowed.
