La Gloria Tolantongo is not Las Grutas Tolantongo

点评：While La Gloria Tolantongo and Las Grutas Tolantongo are across the river from each other, they are fairly different experiences. We travelled to & were staying at Las Grutas. We specifically traveled there (from CDMX by buses) during the week to avoid tourist crowds on weekends. Las Grutas was still relatively touristy even during the week … which is why we were so delighted to stumble upon the suspension bridge over the river to La Gloria! Las Grutas charges 100 pesos to get a wristband and cross to La Gloria. The wristband ensures they let you back to Las Grutas without paying another 230 (or was it 240?) pesos entrance fee when you return from La Gloria.
La Gloria is less developed & “less tamed” than Las Grutas. In short, it is a magical paradise.
While there are small signs to the major falls/pools, La Gloria was best explored with no agenda. It was a great adventure to come upon poza after poza, one more beautiful and warm than the last. Water shoes & waterproof phone/camera case are a must.
Since we were there during the week, it almost felt abandoned … adding to the adventure! No buildings open, except bathrooms, and only a few tent campers.
La Gloria will seem magical & wonderful to you if you prefer to be “in” nature rather than just viewing it. If you want bathrooms with toilet paper, restaurants & hotels, you will probably be happier at Las Grutas. Or, you can do both, like we did. You’ll just need to stay for a couple days. How bad could that be … especially during the week?!
