Botanischen Garten der Universität Basel的点评
点评：Basel is home to the oldest and perhaps best University in Switzerland. While the University started on the Riverfront, today one of its largest concentrations is around the Peterplatz near the Spalen Gate. Here a large part of the biology department is housed with a focus on botany with both outdoor and greenhouse exhibits of tropical plants, desert plants, mosses and temperate plants from around the world. Additionally, the grounds open at 8:00 and the greenhouses at 9:00 which well before most Basel attractions at 10:00.
We started our Saturday morning early getting to the gardens just before 9:00. Side note, on Saturdays, Peterplatz host a large Fleamarket which was interesting to see as well. Once in the gate, we walked around the outside exhibits which had several flowers as well as interesting trees like a Sequoia from California. Then, the greenhouses opened, and we went to the desert plants, then the mosses before ending with the tropical plants. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the entire tropical space as our friends were next door at the Spalen Gate. Still, I was very impressed by the quality and quantity of the specimens and the diversity of the gardens from across the world. It was one of the better botanical gardens, especially considering that it is mostly a teaching garden.
While it is not something you plan your vacation in Switzerland around, once you are here and especially if you are a morning person looking for something to see, I highly recommend you visit to the University Botanical Gardens. I also recommend tying it with a visit to the Spalen Gate which is directly adjacent to the gardens before the main Basel attractions open.
