点评:This site is a great way to gain insight into George Washington's childhood and the beginnings of his military career. Our visit began by chatting with a very nice woman in the visitor's center who gave a detailed explanation of what to expect during our visit. I wish I could remember her name, but she said she had worked there for over 20 years. We then took a self-guided walk through the garden and a nice stroll to the replicated home.
Our tour guide, Peter R., was wonderful, with a good sense of humor. He described the archaeology and research that led to the home's reconstruction, which was very interesting. Peter gave us a detailed, informative talk through all of the rooms of the home, and we never felt rushed through. He continually cited the resources used to verify the situations he mentioned. We enjoyed walking down to the river and viewing the home as people of the period would have seen it.
We learned that the kitchen will be reconstructed after many digs verifying its location near the home. I would love to visit again when it is complete. We finished the visit by viewing the displays and archaeological lab in the visitor's center. There was a large group of school children touring at the same time, and while Peter made sure our visit was unaffected, we could see that there were many activities geared toward the kids so that they were able to absorb the history in ways that were meaningful to them. This is a great place to visit.
