Hiroshima Peace City Monument Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims的点评
点评：Thursday 8th May and we visited the Memorial Peace Park in Hiroshima. One of the main features of the Park is the Peace Pond which is home to this Memorial Cenotaph.
It stands in the Pond at the top end, near the Museum and the opposite end to the Atomic Bomb Dome.
This memorial was built in 1952 and was originally known as the Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace. It has subsequently changed to the Cenotaph for the Victims of the Atomic Bomb.
The Cenotaph is arched shaped like a roof with the intention of providing shelter for the souls of those lost following the bombing.
Under the arch sits a stone chamber which contains a register of the names of those known as victims of the bombing, regardless of nationality. Names are added to the register on an annual basis.
In front of the Cenotaph a plaque lays on the ground which has an engraving, in 3 languages, Japanese, German and English which reads:-
"Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil."
It adds " This monument embodies the hope that Hiroshima, devastated on the 6th August 1945 by the world's first atomic bombing will forever stand as a City of Peace. The stone chamber in the centre contains the Register of Deceased A-Bomb victims. The inscription on the front of the panel offers a prayer for the peaceful repose of the victims and a pledge on behalf of all humanity never to repeat the evil of war. It expresses the spirit of Hiroshima-enduring grief, transcending hatred, pursuing harmony and prosperity for all, and yearning for genuine and lasting world peace".
From a point in front of the Cenotaph it is possible to look through the arch and down towards the Peace Flame, on its concrete platform, down to the Atomic Bomb Dome at the far end.
Standing looking down the Pond, having read the inscriptions, one again moved us to tears. The horrors that this City endured must never be allowed happen again.
