点评:Open since 2012, the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre functions very much as a bastion of culture, not just for the Kwanlin Dün First Nation but, I would argue, for all of Whitehorse. How come? Well, many of the primary exhibits detail Kwanlin Dün history, but they do so in a way that addresses colonialism and its impacts. Importantly, this addressing of historic displacements and the pain it has caused (culturally, psychologically, intergenerationally) isn’t done so in a negative way. The displays, which focus on “new ways of life” and “back to the river,” ask us to re-examine our own cultural biases while concomitantly strengthening Kwanlin Dün culture. Indeed, “culture” is not static or museum-like. It is ever evolving and transforming into something new; hence, the importance of the juxtaposition of the historic displays with the contemporary. It’s a beautiful synthesis of the classic and the modern.
I’d been curious to patronize this dynamic Centre ever since my last visit to Whitehorse in 2014. Unfortunately, time got the better of me a decade ago and I didn’t make it. This time, though, I made sure to check it out. The Centre was a focal point of the Rendezvous festival – something I don’t think was the case a decade ago – so this was nice to see. At the time of my visit, there was a live band performance inside the “Long House” and it was pretty jamming. Almost made me reminisce about the Sheepdog’s performance in Shipyards Park ten years ago! After taking in some of the music, I ambled about the Centre and observed some of the permanent displays. Surprisingly, it didn’t take very long to get through the Centre. I don’t know – it was informative, but I thought there’d be more to it. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by other Indigenous cultural centres elsewhere?
