We came for truffles. We left feeling like we were part of a family.

点评：We thought we were booking a truffle hunt. What we actually got was one of those days that quietly becomes the story you tell when people ask what Italy was really like.
We started out in the countryside with the dogs, and I was grinning almost immediately. Watching them work is just… joyful. They know exactly what they’re doing, and you can feel how old this tradition is without anyone having to make a speech about it. We learned a lot about truffles, the land, and why finding them still matters here. But the best part wasn’t the “information.” It was being out there, walking, laughing, getting a little dirty, and feeling like we were part of something instead of standing to the side of it.
Then we went back to their home.
That’s the moment it stopped feeling like a tour.
They welcomed us the way you hope Italy will welcome you and almost never does: like we’d been invited, not processed. The meal was homemade and so good it made us a little quiet at the table. Not restaurant-fancy. Better than that. The kind of food that tastes like someone actually cooked it for you. Sitting there in the countryside, eating together after the hunt, I kept thinking, this is the day we came for, even if we didn’t know it yet.
It was the dogs, the hills, the hospitality, and that meal all at once. Personal in a way most “experiences” just aren’t. We’ve had a lot of beautiful days in Italy. This is the one that felt human.
If you’re going to Umbria, do this. Not because it’s impressive. Because you’ll remember the people.
