Much More to See Than You Think
Bentwaters Cold War Museum的点评
点评：This is a very interesting museum which actually has far more to see than you might first think. Entrance fee at £7.50 for adults is very reasonable. There are several interesting aircraft on display at the main museum site but it is well worth paying the additional £5 to be taken on a tour of the museum’s restoration facility which is located in a separate (private) area some distance from the main museum and contains several more aircraft including an English Electric Lightning. These tours are limited on numbers so best to enquire as soon as you arrive. The tour price includes transport to and from the restoration facility site which is about 5 minutes away by minibus.
The main museum site has many very interesting displays regardless of the complete aircraft. Volunteers are on hand to help guide you and answer questions. Of particular interest was a fascinating talk, by an Ex USAF gentleman, about how Bentwatres airfield operated in support of the A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft. Not a criticism, but it would have been good if these talks could have been at scheduled times and mentioned to visitors on arrivals. This chap really knew his stuff and was an absolute mine of information as well as being most engaging with his audience. It would have been a shame to have missed this aspect of the museum. There is also a small cinema on site showing films about the airfield / USAF.
Other facilities include plenty of car parking, toilets, a nice little American Diner style café, and a small gift shop. I would highly recommend this museum to aviation enthusiasts or anyone with an interest in cold war era military history. Check out their web site as the museum is only open on a relatively small number of days each year. It is well worth visiting!
