点评:I couldn’t believe that I’d never heard of this place before, having passed through Forres regularly over the years. Apparently, it has been going for over 30 years. I only became aware of it having picked up a leaflet while visiting another visitor attraction the previous day and planning to visit solely for the Logie Timber Shop, as my son has an interest in carpentry.
Logie Steading is only 10 minutes drive out of Forres, just off the A940 (watch out for the brown tourist signs). It is laid out in what would have been the stables and outbuildings of Logie House. There’s plenty of car parking, toilets and a small children’s play area across the way. You can also visit the Logie House Gardens, a short walk away, for £5 (Historic House Members free). Other activities are available on the estate.
Starting off in Logie Timber, which was the primary purpose of the visit, this is a unique shop, split into 3 sections. The front shop sells a collection of workwear and outdoor clothing and equipment (Carhartt, Ridgeline, Petromax, Light my Fire), where my son picked up some Carhartt jeans and t-shirt at really good prices. The middle area has a selection of timber related tools, from the likes of Hultafors. The rear of the shop is where the timber is, with a selection of wood, from small off-cuts costing upwards of £1 to huge pieces of redwood (from the estate) selling for £100s. With limited space in the car, we had to direct our purchases here accordingly.
Time meant that we didn’t get to go into every shop or the Heritage Centre, however I can recommend SPE Atelier and Botanics, where we picked up a candle and some handwash. A wee bit more expensive than similar establishments, but the scents are unique. I found a candle with a scent that I’ve been trying to find for ages.
We also visited the Art Gallery, which has a huge selection of art work and jewellery. Tempted but no purchases on this occasion.
Country Man is a small niche menswear shop. Not really my taste and I found the staff a bit too pushy here.
Final stop was the farm and garden shop.
There is also a ladieswear shop, bookshop and café that we didn’t have the time to visit.
Definitely on my list to stop at next time I’m passing near Forres.
