点评:Sighișoara is certainly picturesque, and I can understand why many visitors like it. The narrow lanes, the hilltop setting, the towers and the compact citadel create a romantic atmosphere, and it is pleasant to walk around for a couple of hours.
However, I was rather disappointed by the city as a whole. It is heavily marketed as one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns, but visually it felt much less medieval than I had expected. Much of the residential architecture appears to be from the 17th and 18th centuries or later, with relatively plain plaster façades. The medieval street layout and fortifications are still clearly visible, but if you expect a large amount of visibly medieval domestic architecture, the reality is quite different.
What I also missed was a sense of everyday life and cultural depth inside the citadel. Many buildings seem to be used as guesthouses, restaurants or tourist accommodation, and there are a lot of souvenir shops, but very few interesting independent shops, workshops, galleries or local crafts. I would have expected, for example, ceramics, traditional crafts, small design shops or other places that reflect the history of a former guild town. Instead, much of the commercial offer feels generic and aimed mainly at short-stay tourists.
This makes parts of the citadel feel slightly like a historical backdrop rather than a genuinely lived-in old town. Compared with places such as Quedlinburg or Rothenburg ob der Tauber, I found the architectural substance, variety and urban life considerably less impressive.
Sighișoara is still worth visiting if you are in Transylvania, particularly for the street pattern, fortifications and views. But in my opinion, two or three hours are enough, and the description “medieval town” creates expectations that the present-day appearance does not entirely fulfil.
