点评:We drove over from Florida's east coast to visit Weeki Wachee Springs and, since we were in such close proximity to the western coast, decided to see the Gulf of Mexico. Bayport Park showed up on google maps as the most convenient access - about 7 miles from the spring.
Turns out that Bayport is a historic Civil War battle site. Plaques describe the local war history, as well as post war and even prehistoric times here. There's a large covered picnic pavilion here which could serve nicely for family reunion activities.
The breeze off the water was divine on an 85-degree afternoon, but I was a bit disappointed that we couldn't stick our toes in the gulf. Access was blocked because the state is rehabilitating waterfront terrain here that was previously trampled to death by humans. So you climb an elevated metal boardwalk lined with park benches for peeks at the gulf between the trees.
We walked over to the boat launch area of the park and spotted a magnificent bald eagle high on a tree limb overhead. He did two loops to entertain us before resuming his perch. We were able to stick our toes in the marsh water at the edge of the ramp - not the same as stepping into the gulf, but refreshing nonetheless.
A great egret tolerated us for several minutes before taking flight, as did a white ibis perched on the ramp rail. I appreciated the fact that very few visitors were utilizing the services here. We had the park mostly to ourselves on a Tuesday afternoon.
