点评:The Novium is a good free museum, which also houses the tourist information desk by the entrance. They do excellent temporary exhibitions on the top floor - I have previously travelled a long way specifically to see the Arts in Chichester one, and the current one about the important local company Shippam's is fascinating. The exhibition room is small but I spent hours in there as there was so much to read. There is also a smaller area on one of the landings which houses temporary displays on various subjects.
The ground floor deals with the Roman history of the city and you can even see part of the Roman foundations behind a barrier in the corner of the reception area. The middle floor deals with local history and I love the library area at one side, where you can sit and browse lots of local history books. I do wish the social history side of things was bigger - I remember the old museum in its former home and I might be wrong but I feel like it had a lot more space and more things on display. The current museum really just has one big central glass case with not that many objects in it, and in some cases the explanation labels obscure the object behind.
I also hate the fact that the local history room also serves as the children's play area, with various toys and activities scattered around the edge of the room. I understand that children need to be entertained but at times it makes that room unbearable - on a couple of occasions I had to leave because of the piercing screams and children running into me when I was trying to read the displays. The two things don't go together!
