点评:The North Atlantic Aviation Museum looks at the history of aviation in Gander. The reason Gander exists is because of aviation. In the days before jet planes, airplanes flying across the Atlantic needed a place to refuel. Gander is inland and has better weather than the coastal towns. The airport opened in the 1930s and was the launching point for getting troops and supplies to Europe during World War II. The town grew up around the airport and was relocated farther away from the flight paths in the 1950s. From above, the streets look like the head of a gander.
There are many exhibits to explore. The Link Trainer was the world's first true flight simulator. It was developed in the 1920s by Edwin Link. I found the sign in the men's room amusing. Many celebrities landed at Gander. They had a 1942 Douglas DC-3 cockpit on display, with a simulated landing. The 1942 deHavilland Tiger Moth on display was used as a training aircraft by the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. After the war, it was rechristened "Box of Tricks" and performed during air shows.
There was a section of the museum devoted to the events of September 11, 2001. You can see thank you letters to the people of Gander and the town mascot, Commander Gander. The steel beam from the World Trade Center on display was given to Gander in 2011 to thank them for their selfless role after the terrorist attacks.
