点评:Excited to write this review! We loved our ice cave adventure from Katlatrack! We chose the normal one from their website, not the fast one.
Some notes on outdoor adventures in Iceland: Weather plays a big part of your experience, and Katlatrack (and most other tour providers) provide free rescheduling 24hrs+ out. So, I highly encourage you to check the weather over and over, and maximize the right adventures based upon the best weather by rescheduling. Also on this topic, Vik is approximately 2 hrs from Reyjkavik without road/weather issues. So if you're planning on driving yourself, give yourself plenty of time.
We met at their location in Vik, where check-in was smooth and they have gear for rent if you need it (they'll provide cramp-ons and helmet for free).
Gear needed: It'll be cold and windy (its Iceland and you're going onto a glacier). I would encourage you to be confident in the waterproofing on your boots (one of us had their waterproofing fail and had to hike the tour in wet feet), and have good gloves and beanie (without pom, the helmet has to go over your hat).
The vehicle: We got into an extended Ford SuperJeep with some of the gnarliest tires I've seen. Ride was smooth on the pavement until we went off-road. Car could have been a little warmer for the ride, but we were also in the very back.
The trip: Pavement ride was smooth, comfortable and our guide gave plenty of useful and exciting pieces of information. The off-road portion is fun, and it's always interesting to see how two large vehicles plan to pass each other on narrow, snowy, slushy "road". But they always did safely.
Note on the off-road portion: I suspect that these tours spend more time off-road than is strictly necessary to get to the glacier, but our guide did say that when its colder and everything is frozen, they can take a faster route. I'd be excited for that. Our vehicle did get stuck trying to get over a final hill for about 15 minutes. But our guide managed to get us unstuck and over. None of us felt that this time reduced the amount of time we got on the glacier. Though we did end up getting back a bit later than originally planned.
The Ice Caves/Glacier itself: The glacier is awesome as you come up on it, the scenery changes from the rocky/snowy landscape to all of a sudden you can spot the blue of the glacier. Then you're there! We got out of the vehicle, everyone received cramp-ons, a helmet and a headlamp and we were off. Our guide did a great job to inform everyone of the hazards (slippery ice, slush, water, etc) and encouraged us to use the ropes/handrails where they existed on the trail.
The ice caves change over time as they're being eroded by the wind, sun and water. So the experience won't be the same. I've seen some reviews being upset by the caves, and all I can say is that nature be naturing. Hopefully your experience will be as great as ours. I suspect that going earlier in the seasons (Dec-June) than later (July-Nov) will result in bigger, more exciting caves but I could be wrong.
The Weather: We were fortunate that we had really good spots of weather, but we also had to walk through some heavy wind, blowing snow and some sleety-rain type stuff. Its Iceland, the weather is gonna weather. Locals would tell us: a good weather day is one without wind. And I believe it.
At the end of the glacier tour, our guide took us out onto the black sand beaches for a few minutes to grab some photos and walk around. It was amazing, but very cold. I was excited to get back in the SuperJeep afterwards.
Summary: We had a great time, I really liked working with Katlatrack (we rescheduled this without issue due to weather issues with other days of our trip) and the glacier/ice caves lived up to expectations.
