In May 2024, I came to Unst for the Hermaness and the Keen of Hamar nature reserves. During my travel planning, I found out about the trail, before arriving in Unst. But I had no idea how great it would be in person.The chosen locations are brilliant. I especially enjoyed the Sky Stop benches, where I listened more than once to the poems and stories in the Shetland dialect, as well as local harp and fiddle music.
Even on my last day in Unst, when it was raining and foggy, I sat down on the bench at Saxa Vord dressed in my full rain gear. There was no view of the surrounding area, and it was quite windy, so I had to press my ear to the loudspeaker. I really wanted to visit at least all the Sky Stop benches, and I made sure I did!
My most favourite benches were the Keen of Hamar, where you get a wonderful explanation of the changing position of the sunrise between summer and winter – “looking out to see, open your arms wide as if to welcome an old friend“ (I love it), and Swinna Ness. At Swinna Ness I even danced around the loudspeaker. Framgord is great too, I really got a feel for which places were chosen by the Vikings for settlement. I also visited the coast of Collaster for a sunset, amazing! The directions given on the map are very precise and helpful to find the right spot.
I have visited Unst twice now (2024 and 2025) and I am looking forward to coming back 2026 to discover all the other points I haven't seen so far.
