点评:While visiting Cabo San Lucas, we took a day trip to San Jose de Los Cabos to check out the art district. We have seen many levels of quality in Alijibres (also called Tonals) in many parts of Mexico and America…. and passed them by. These are on another level. The shop owner, Antonio, is part of a large family of master craftsmen and craftswomen from Oaxaca that carve these symbolic and beautiful pieces. The detail is mesmerizing and you see something special each time you look. Antonio was so generous with his time, explaining the history of his family and the process required for each of these one of a kind pieces to come to life. There is a lovely video in the shop showing their creation from a block of rough wood to the final art piece. Each piece represents months of work and attention to detail. Custom requests are welcome - if you have patience! Antonio explained the symbolism and we found a Tonal that spoke to us so deeply that we had the emotional reaction that tells you you’ve found a piece of art that you will cherish forever. Each piece comes with certificates of authenticity and an invitation to Oaxaca to visit the shop. Antonio was not a pushy salesman. He was professional, genuine, hospitable and proud of his family’s tradition and represented the value of those skills. In addition to the Alijibres, the family uses the leftover paints to craft beautiful leather and wool handbags. They are also skilled with sliver and we took home a beautiful pair of earrings as well. Every Thursday evening there is an art walk in this area (like an open house) and a great opportunity to see all the artisans in this town. We will treasure our Tonal forever and enjoy sharing it’s story and history with our family. Maybe one day we will return to Oaxaca and thank the artist in person. Visit Yaga, meet Antonio and see what the Alijibre / Tonal can be when it’s executed by a master.
