We picked up a van in Milan on August 20th. The same van had been returned by another customer on August 18th — with a note in the damage report saying “mechanical malfunction – further diagnosis required.” No inspection was done before handing it to us. That was our mistake too: we trusted them and signed.
Within 48 hours (less than 10 hours of driving), the brakes started failing in the Dolomites. When I contacted their “on-road support,” their advice was terrifying: “Keep driving downhill using only the engine.” On mountain roads, with failing brakes.
Following that reckless instruction ended up destroying the engine itself. We had to crawl at 20 km/h on the highway all the way to Munich. We lost our itinerary, prepaid activities, and had to pay for repairs, camping, food, and parking out of pocket.
When I escalated, their staff (Sulam) literally told me over the phone “we are not a grocery store” as a way of refusing proper support. Imagine hearing that after being handed an unsafe vehicle that risked our lives.
Their Manifesto claims safety is their top priority and that when they fail, they “make amends and compensate accordingly.” In our case: safety was ignored, the vehicle was dangerous, the support was insulting, and the compensation process has been confusing at best.
I’m now escalating this through the European Consumer Centre (ECC-Net), but in the meantime: please, if you’re considering renting with Indie Campers — know the risks.
