点评:Super interesting visit to the Campbell Carriage Factory Museum in Sackville, New Brunswick. It’s one of only two surviving carriage factories in North America and the only one in Canada. The owners essentially simply set down their tools and walked away when the factory closed in the 1950’s so the museum is brimming with fascinating artifacts. All stages of carriage construction are in the factory - from cutting the logs to the careful construction of the wheels and body to upholstering the seats and painting the final product. There is a blacksmith’s shop on the site as well since a substantial portion of each carriage (or sleigh) was made of iron. There are also very interesting pieces of agricultural equipment like a large wooden hay baler was shared by numerous families over the winter months to bale hay that had been grown in the fertile Tantramar marshes over the summer months and then stored in hay barns. The owners of the factory - the Campbell family - not only made carriages and sleighs but also were involved in the undertaking business so there are unique artifacts related to this line of work. For example, a wicker coffin that essentially served as a body bag and was used to transport the newly deceased to the funeral home before the body was were placed in a wooden coffin.
Admission is by donation and all visitors get a personalized, private tour by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides.
Would highly recommend!
