点评：You may find a brochure about La Taillanderie during your trip to the Doubs, but it won't convey the true flavour of the experience you'll encounter. If you have any curiosity about how the people in remote valleys of this region used their skills and its resources to subsist in the era of early industrialisation, this farm/workshop complex will reward it amply. The exterior of the museum appears like many of the attractive, time-worn, local barns and farmhouses, but once inside, the industrial and social history of a legion of toolmakers is conveyed in complete authenticity, as though they'd just downed tools in this rabbit warren of working spaces. One of the museum's strengths is that it hasn't been overly curated and sanitised, like so many museums today. The 'organised chaos' of the processes involved in forging and shaping metal has been preserved, rusty and dusty as they might now appear. The workers' efforts were powered by the poetic 'Archange' spring, via an aqueduct, wooden mill wheels and a tremendous set of bellows, the only examples in France which are still made of the original wood, which was the prime reason for its designation as a historic monument. The main tools made here were scythe blades, an absolutely essential requirement for cutting hay by hand (there are still countless meadows in the Doubs today). The caretaker of the site gave us a compehensive tour in French, but knew some English as well. He clearly has a deep knowledge and appreciation of the site. It was a pleasure to interact with him. La Taillanderie was unexpectedly enjoyable and is in need of as much support as we can give, for reminding us how hard people used to work to make essential products that ensured their survival in an unforgiving landscape.
